Take Flight

Have you ever wanted to fly away from the life you are living right now?

Does your life sometimes feel like it’s nothing but one big struggle right after another?

Do you feel as if just getting through the day is too tough at times?

What if I told you that with Jesus in your life things could change?

You may be thinking your life is such a mess that he wouldn’t want someone like you.

I too have known that feeling… it’s¬†not true.

Though you may not think it possible, believe me when I say this…

“He loves you”

He loves you no matter who you are or where you’ve been.

Jesus loves you and he wants YOU, and you are welcome right now just as you are.

Because your life has a meaning and a purpose.

Jesus loves you because you are worthy of his love.

He loves you just because you are YOU.

You are so adored.

And though you may think your life is just way too messy right now, I want you to know that Jesus specializes in messy.

He can help you clean up the mess and start a brand new beginning.

Jesus can turn your mixed up messy life into something of beauty.

All you have to do is ask him to come.

Tell him you want to know him and then ask him to come into your life and rescue you today.

He is waiting for you, ready to show you how to spread your wings and take flight as you soar with him into the brand new beginning of the rest of your life.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29

Artwork in the Sky

This past week I went on a cruise to the Bahamas.

Each day I was amazed several times a day by God’s amazing artwork in the sky.

I Find It!

“I find it! I find it! I find the giraffe!”

My 3 year old grandson squealed those words in delight on our visit to the St. Louis Zoo last Monday as he ran towards the giraffe he had just spotted. ¬†As he ran he kept turning back to us saying, ‚ÄúA giraffe!¬†See?!‚ÄĚ ¬†On his¬†face he wore¬†a huge smile of ¬†joy as if finding a giraffe were the greatest thing in the whole world; And he wanted to make sure grandma¬†and grandpa¬†did not miss out on seeing his big find!

20150831_141916 (1)I have to say I sure am sure glad I didn’t miss out!wpid-20150831_142029.jpg

Aren’t they just beautiful??!

We also saw these guys.wpid-20150831_143346.jpg

We didn’t make it through the whole zoo that day because unfortunately grand-kids,¬†okay make that¬†Grandparents…¬†tire out after a few hours at the zoo. ¬†But what we did get to see¬†at the zoo was really beautiful! ¬†I am in awe of the¬†the detail that God put into each animal that he created and this is only a small handful of the animals on earth.

The trip was made even more amazing when looking through the eyes of my grandchildren.  I love how children see everything with amazement and excitement that sometimes us grownups have lost over the years. It makes me wonder why we lose that excitement in the process of growing up.

I have seen these animals a lot over the years but not like I saw them this time. Why is his neck so long?? Why does he have stripes? Why is his feathers sticking out on top of his head? Why, why why¬†?? I don’t know why, but the whys are¬†what makes each animal a unique creation. ¬†Can you imagine if zebras didn’t have stripes or giraffes necks were short?

I think a person could live on this earth for a thousand years and never have a day go by that there would not be something beautiful and unique to see.

Another thing that happened that day was we went into the bird house. ¬†When we went in my grandson started covering his ears and became extremely scared. ¬†He kept saying “I don’t like that noise!” ¬†The thing is it was completely¬†silent inside of the birdhouse. The birds were not singing and actually it was so quiet it felt deafening.

I call it silence but¬†my grandson was saying, “I don’t¬†like that noise!” ¬†How odd that our world is so noisy that total silence would be like a sound to a child and to think that¬†the sound of silence¬†would frighten him kinda puts things into perspective as to just how noisy our world really is. ¬†The¬†complete silence sounded beautiful to me! I don’t think I would have noticed it had my grandson not brought it to my attention.

I wonder if I have became immune at times to noticing the beauty around me just because I am a grown up.

I want to be like my grandson really hearing and seeing the world around me and pointing and exclaiming “I find it! I find it!”

P.S. For the grammar police….¬†I was quoting a 3 year old in the beginning of this post… or maybe I really do have bad grammar¬†¬†ūüėČ

Sitting in the Window Seat

I have two jobs.

Job number one I am the secretary at my church and job number two I am a travel agent. ¬†Since I just told you that I am a travel agent this next part may sound very strange to you….I am afraid to fly. Yep you read that right… I am a travel agent and I am afraid to fly.

But I fly anyway.

You may ask, “Why do I still choose to fly?¬†”

My answer is…I fly because I have chosen not to let fear consume my life and stop me from missing out on the good stuff. Dealing with the fear is always worth doing because what usually waits at the other side of the plane ride is usually something fun and exciting. I love to travel, I love seeing different places, experiencing different cultures and just going places that I have never been. ¬†I am not sure how I could experience all that awesomeness¬†without flying so I swallow my fear and make¬†myself get on the plane.

Though I say I am afraid to fly my fear is not quite as bad as it used to be and I have actually come a long way.  Years ago I when I flew I would close my eyes the whole time the plane was taking off  and pretty much hid my face under my sweater (because everyone knows that hiding under a sweater will save your life if the plane crashes). Once the plane was at cruising altitude then I would just sit in my seat frozen in fear the whole time counting down the minutes until landing.

One time on a flight to the Dominican Republic the plane we were on hit an air pocket just as we were preparing to land and the plane felt as if it did some sort of free fall¬†for miles with the captain seeming to lose control for what seemed like forever. ¬†He finally got it under control but then it happened again! It was nighttime¬†and did I mention we were about to land??! I thought we were going to smash into the ground any second… but we didn’t.

Also to top that off during that week while we were in the Dominican Republic it also happened to be the week that a plane in New Your City hit a flock of geese¬†and Captain “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed the plane into the Hudson River (story here), so the whole time we were in the DR¬†every time I turned the TV on I would see news coverage about the plane¬†and by time we went home I was petrified to fly home and just knew we were going to hit a flock of geese on take off. ¬†I got on the plane anyway and we made it home safely as you have probably figured out by now,¬†because if we hadn’t you would not be reading this story

I have flown many many times since then all of them without incident but I am still fearful of flying. I have come to the point that I still don‚Äôt like taking off a whole lot but once the plane is up I am okay. . A friend once told me to try to imagine when I am in a plane that I am just sitting in a room. ¬†That theory¬†seems to work pretty well as long as we don’t hit any turbulence… most rooms I have been in do not move unless there is an earth tremor or…..unless they are in the air at 37,000 feet!

This past week my husband and I went to Mexico.¬† On our way home the plane wasn‚Äôt full so my husband and I ended up with a whole row of seats to ourselves. ¬†One thing I never do on a plane is sit in a window seat because I just can’t bear to sit so close to the edge of the plane (Ya I know… you¬†just rolled your eyes ūüėÄ ) ¬†About halfway through the flight my husband got up to go in the bathroom and I am not sure why I decided to do this, but I bravely moved over into the window seat while he was gone.

I only planned to sit there for just a minute but then I glimpsed out the window and I noticed how the clouds seemed to be flat, almost like a fluffy white blanket and we seemed to be gliding along on top of it.

I got out my camera and took a picture.20150629_140353 (1)

And then another20150629_140246

And another20150629_140259

I am not sure when it happened but somehow I became lost in the beauty outside the plane and I completely forgot that I am scared to fly AND…I stayed in the window seat for the rest of the flight! ¬†There was something about seeing the world from up in the air that just left me in awe of just how great God is.

I mean like how wow is it that the sky and earth just seem to go on forever and ever. 20150629_142435

It’s just so magnificent the way the clouds are puffier above them then below them.20150629_145219

Something about what I saw from the window of the plane felt so freeing.

I had already had a weekend of soul searching and this flight home was like the icing on the cake. It was like God was speaking to me and saying, “why do you continually worry and try to control things? Why do you continue to let scars from the past reopen? Those old things can not hurt you anymore. You have got to¬†move forward and quit looking backwards!

Sitting there on that airplane looking out over that huge world made me feel so small and it felt like I was just sitting there perched in the palm of God’s hand looking out over the edge. It was as if¬†I was looking out over something so much bigger than I ever could begin to imagine.

If God is big enough to have this huge huge world under control why would I not think that he had my teeny tiny life under control?

“Look out the window! I have all of this under control!”20150629_150713 20150629_150928 20150629_150750 20150629_150935 20150629_151016

I even stayed in the window seat and watched all the way through the landing! Wow! God always amazes me!

I took you from the ends of the earth,
from its farthest corners I called you.
I said, ‚ÄėYou are my servant‚Äô;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. ~ Isaiah 41:9-10

Life on the Inside

11377329_10202883214841199_6780997396773518638_n

My husband and I were sitting outside tonight looking at and old dead tree that sits just inside of the woods line in our backyard. The tree has been dead for as many years as we have lived in our house which is a little over 16 years.

Over the years the tree¬†has changed a lot because gradually most of it’s branches have fallen off with the addition of within this past week a huge branch fell off leaving a big hole in place of where it had been.

We were sitting there looking at the tree and talking about how cool it looks because there are knots all over it and some of them look like faces stacked on top of one another. We also noticed that right at the top of the tree there is an area that looks like a crocodile head.

As we were discussing the different things we each saw on the tree¬†suddenly we noticed something¬†that we hadn’t noticed before‚Ķ.

DSCN1681

There in the hole was a raccoon and now he was checking us out as we checked him out.

Eventually we¬†realized there was¬†more than one raccoon and it¬†seems there could possibly be a whole family of raccoon’s living inside of our dead tree.

What looked to us to be and old dead tree on the outside, actually was full of life on the inside.

How cool is that?! ūüėÄ

You are Beautiful

image_editor_share_1431188786314

This morning I was putting on my makeup using my magnifying makeup mirror.  As I put on my eye makeup I started to notice all the creases and crinkles around my eyes. I see my face everyday but for some reason today the wrinkles seemed to jump right out at me.

After seeing the wrinkles I began to¬†see¬†all kinds of tiny imperfections in my skin … I saw a pimple, my eyebrows had an occasional straggling hair in the wrong place, and¬†If that wasn’t bad enough I also noticed that I seemed to have giant pores and my eyelashes were thinner in some places than others.

The more and more up I looked at myself the more I found wrong.  I then found myself correcting my eyeliner to try to open my eyes up more. I then got out the tweezers to pluck the straggling misplaced eyebrows and I actually tried to use cover stick around my eyes on the bags and wrinkles I saw.

After about 15 frustrating long minutes of trying to fix all the imperfections I realized that there was no way I could possible ever fix them all and I said to myself, ‚ÄúGirl you need to back away from the mirror!‚ÄĚ

As I was backing away from the mirror and I suddenly realized I couldn’t see all those imperfections in the normal mirror and realized that¬†I had just wasted a whole lot of time trying to fix something that wasn’t noticeable unless under a magnifying mirror and besides that, those things actually never needed fixing in the first place!

As I sat there thinking about how silly I had just behaved suddenly it popped in my head that yes I am starting to get older and I do now have a few wrinkles or ‘imperfections’ but guess what??¬†¬†God loves me despite my imperfections! ¬†Also who decide¬†they are imperfections really? I bet God doesn’t see them as imperfections. Our society has placed huge expectations on us to look good now days. We have creams to remove wrinkles, ¬†tummy blaster diets, we dye our hair to get rid of the gray and make us look younger.¬† There are gyms on every corner with machines and trainers. We torture our bodies to make them look ‚Äėperfect‚Äô but really does that change anything that is really important? What is truly important and why do we people look at ourselves through a magnifying mirror? Sadly sometimes we look at others under ¬†a magnifying mirror also.

Why not just be who we are and be the beautiful creation that God created us to be?

Have you ever told a 3 year old that they are pretty?? Most will answer with the words ‚ÄúI know‚ÄĚ and I bet you would think it was sweet and not think anything bad of her saying ‚ÄėI know‚Äô.¬† If you told one of your grown up friends that they were beautiful and she replied ‚ÄúI know‚ÄĚ what would you think?¬† I bet you would think that she was full of herself or conceited.¬† The truth is there is nothing wrong with knowing and truly believing in who you are and who you were created to be.

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God created YOU in his image!

Psalm 139:13-14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

YOU were fearfully and wonderfully made!

I am not sure if God gets his feelings hurt but I do think it must disappoint him when we cut ourselves down.  If you were to paint a picture or create a sculpture and asked someone what they thought of it and they pointed out all the imperfections wouldn’t you be disappointed that they did not like your creation??

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

YOU were created by God the master painter, the author of your life, and YOU are beautiful!

If you are feeling like you are not beautiful today, quit being so hard on yourself and see yourself the way God sees you.

YOU my friend, ARE beautiful!

Have a beautiful day,

Terri
